Roger Carl Nelson, age 83, of Prescott, WI, formerly of Hastings, MN passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 27, 2025, after nearly a seven-year struggle with Parkinson’s and Dementia, at the Prescott Nursing and Rehabilitation Community with family at his side.
Roger was born at home in Belle Creek Township (Goodhue County) on January 8, 1942 to Carl and Myrtle (McKinley) “Honey” Nelson. His family, consisting of his dad, mom, two sisters and a brother, moved many times during his growing up years due to his dad’s numerous employments.
After graduating from Hastings High School in 1960 he attended the University of River Falls, Wisconsin and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He later earned his master’s degree. He taught for 32 years, mostly sixth grade math. He retired from his teaching career, teaching in the same building where he spent his senior year of high school.
Roger married Audrey (Hall) on November 28, 1964, and they were married for 60 years. Roger’s love of golf led him to walk many miles on golf courses and getting four holes-in-one. Over the years he enjoyed bowling, softball and watching sports in general. He especially liked watching his own children and grandchildren.
Roger is survived by his wife, Audrey; children, Blaine (Nancy) Nelson of Bloomington, MN, Dean Nelson of River Falls, WI, and Caren Davidge of Camarillo, CA; grandchildren, Ethan Nelson, Teagan Davidge and Morgan Davidge; sister, JoAnn Theodorson; brother, Allen (Sue) Nelson; sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Morris) Chausse, Shirlie Dunn; brothers-in-law, Raymond Hall, Leslie Hall; and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; sister, Peggy Backes; niece, Pam Backes; brothers-in-law, Einer Theodorson, Danny Dunn; sister-in-law, Cindy Hall; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Francis and Evelyn Hall.
A Memorial Service for Roger will be held on Monday, March 17, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Hastings with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Family and friends are cordially invited to a reception immediately following the service. Interment will take place at Lakeside Cemetery at a later date.
Services have been entrusted to Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel, Hastings.
