Robert J. Schutz

Robert John Schutz, age 86 of Hastings, MN, died peacefully on Monday, July 25, 2022. Robert was born on September 24, 1935 in Mountain Lake, Minnesota. After high school he graduated from the University of Minnesota. During college, he met and married Phyllis Post in the same year, 1956. His first job was in Lewiston, Minnesota as a District Forester for the state of Minnesota. There they raised their 3 kids until a job change to work for Great Northern Railroad as a purchasing agent. They then moved to Hastings. In 1974 he started work for Webster Lumber Co. and stayed with them until retirement in 1997. Retirement brought enjoyment of cabin life on Mille Lacs Lake. In earlier years, Robert was an avid duck and pheasant hunter. Deer hunting season on the farm was a family tradition. He loved family times up at the cabin fishing, grilling, and relaxing by a fire. Robert was skilled with a chain saw and enjoyed pruning all his trees. He was known to hide the last puzzle piece, he loved licorice, the great out doors, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, agate hunting, traveling, watching Jeopardy and watching the neighbor kids and dogs from the window. One of his favorite sayings was, "Wood is Wonderful." Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis of 66 years; parents, Elmer & Rhoda Schutz; siblings, Jeanne Gustafson, and Marge Glick. He is survived by his children, Paul (Patty) Schutz, Brenda (Jim) Rogers, and Stephanie (Steven) Kurak; grandchildren, Rachel Schutz (birthday twin), Shari Schutz, Andrea Schutz, Karissa (Josh) Spinler, Nic (Amber) Koppy, Katie (Trevor) Koppy, Rebecca (Scott) Klettke, and Thomas (Hazel) Rogers; great-grandchildren, Collin, Connor, Cadin, Bennet, Raelyn, Tucker, Justin, and Henry. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 400 W. 9th St. in Hastings. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be held at Lakeside Cemetery.
