Richard L. Rein Sr.

May 13, 1947 — May 3, 2024

Richard L. Rein Sr., passed away peacefully at the Minneapolis Veterans Home on May 3, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 13, 1947, to George and Leona (Quick) Rein in Baltimore, MD, Rick proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a naval reservist from 1966 to 1972, seeing active duty aboard the USS Blandy in 1968. This period was a defining chapter in his life, where he found comfort, support, and dear friendship among his fellow veterans.

Following his military service, Rick settled in his hometown, where he married in 1977 and raised four children. He was a proud and devoted father and later grandfather, always eager to share stories and capture precious moments with his ever-present disposable camera. Rick's outgoing personality and passion for storytelling served him well in his career as a mortgage banker.

Deeply rooted in his faith, Rick was an active member of his church and volunteered with various organizations, utilizing his organizational skills and time to support those in need. His creative talents shone through in the beautiful church banners and intricate Christmas ornaments he crafted. Rick also shared his love for history, symbolism and ceremony, and many flag and train facts with his loved ones and friends.

During his retirement years, Rick remained involved in his community at the Hastings Veterans Home, serving on the Resident Council, volunteering with the STAARS program through Hastings Public schools, and never missing an opportunity to speak up about veterans’ issues to the many Minnesotan politicians and VA leaders who visited. He leaves behind a legacy of service and compassion that touched the lives of many.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, and his son Gregory. He is survived by his brother Ted (Ginny) Rein, children: Rich Rein Jr. (Michelle Dick), Greta (Adam) Nielson, and Bethany (David) Grimm; grandchildren: Emma, Liam, and Ian, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service to celebrate Rick's life will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 404 W Franklin St, Morristown, MN 55052, with a visitation one hour prior to services and interment to follow at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date. Family and friends are welcome to attend the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, St. Jude's, or a charity of choice in honor of Rick.
