Marjorie S. Olson

Marjorie Shirley Olson of Hastings, MN went to be with her Lord on November 7, 2024, two days before her 105th birthday, with her children at her side. She was a loving, gracious, and grateful woman. Her faith, family, and friends meant everything to her.

Marj was born in Cloquet, Minnesota on November 9, 1919 to Bill and Esther Sundberg. After graduating with honors from Cloquet high school, she attended business school in Duluth and worked as an executive assistant at the Northwest Paper Company.

She married Gustaf Olson in 1942 and moved to Ames, Iowa while he finished his Veterinarian Degree. In 1944, they made their home in Detroit Lakes, MN and raised two children. She lived in Detroit Lakes for 73 years before moving to Park Ridge Apartments in Hastings to be closer to her children. She lived at Park Ridge for seven years before moving to Senior Health and Living after a serious fall. The family is very appreciative of their loving care.

Marjorie was an excellent cook and hostess. She loved to quilt with her church friends and loved her time with the Mary Martha Circle at Trinity Lutheran where she was a very active member. She sang in a city sextet but her greatest love was singing in her church choir. Music was very important to her. She and Gus were able to do some traveling in retirement and enjoyed the yearly fishing trip to Canada with relatives. She kept up with the changing times and enjoyed her computer and Kindle.

Marjorie was preceded in death by Gus, her loving husband of 56 years; both sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and a nephew.

She is survived by her daughter, Cathie (Bob) Prunty; her son, Jarl (Marcia) Olson; five grandchildren, Erik (Jenny) Olson, Kirsten Armstrong, Travis (Jenny) Prunty, Thomas (Kayla) Prunty, Stefan (Danica) Olson; eleven great-grandchildren, Alec, Alaina, Britta, Liliana, Charlie, Tindra, Claire, Gustaf, Oskar, Maverick and Mckinley; her dear nieces and nephews and their families and her AFS student Becky (Leo) Tamondong.

Marj will be forever missed by all who knew and loved her. Gus, friends, and relatives who have gone before her welcomed her to heaven with open arms.

A celebration of Marj’s amazing life will be held at Starkson Family Funeral Home, 3075 Vermillion Street, Hastings, MN, on December 7th at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held an hour before the service. Private family interment.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or Hastings Senior Health and Living Center.
