Leonard H. Zitterich

Leonard passed away peacefully on February 21, 2023, at his daughter’s home in Hastings, Minnesota at the age of 97.


Leonard H. Zitterich, son of John Henry (Hank) and Amelia (Nachtigal) Zitterich, was born on November 19, 1925, at his home in Terril, Iowa and is a graduate of Terril High School. He is a World War II Veteran, served in the U.S. Air Force from January 14, 1944, to May 14, 1946, and then worked for Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis for eleven months before returning to Terril to start his own business, Zitterich Radio & TV.


On September 11, 1955, he was united in marriage to Arlene Larson at First Presbyterian Church in Estherville. The couple made their home in Terril where they ran Zitterich Radio & TV for 40 years. They enjoyed frequent travel, golf and card games, and wintered in Harlingen, Texas for 25 years.


Leonard was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion Walsh Post 432, both of Terril (and recently celebrated 75 years of membership with the American Legion).


He loved country music, fishing, watching football, and spending time with family and friends. And pie!


At the age of 91 he accepted an invitation to travel to Washington DC on the Honor Flight, arranged by the national organization that celebrates veterans with a day of honor at the nation’s memorials.


Leonard is preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Zittrich; parents, John and Amelie (Nactigal) Zitterich; siblings, Maleta Zitterich, Velma Plautz, Everett Zitterich, Bill Zitterich, Marvin Zitterich, Liela Feldman, Dorothy Osmundson, and Lucille Nissen.


He is survived by his children, Lori Zitterich, Craig Zitterich, and Lynda (Troy) Kilfoyl; grandchildren, Claire and Sydney Kilfoyl.


A Celebration of Life service will be planned for late spring/early summer.
