Leona Marie Schutt, daughter of Alexander and Hattie Wagner was born in the town of Day, Marathon County, Wisconsin on August 20, 1936, and passed away on October 28, 2022 at Fairview Southdale hospital following complications from a heart attack.
Leona was a graduate of Stratford, Wisconsin High School. She received her teaching certificate and began her career in 1956. In 1959 Leona signed on to teach at Edgar, Wisconsin High School. On her 1st day of teacher workshop, she met John Schutt. They were married in 1960 and were blessed with 4 sons.
She enjoyed teaching for a number of years and went on to start her own day care which she continued throughout her working career. Leona devoted her life to helping children and others in need. Throughout her retirement years she continued to sew over 2,000 quilts and blankets and 3,000 plus bags for donation mainly to “Mission Mexico”.
Leona was engaged in many social and community activities. She loved to host family events and entertain friends. Her hobbies were sewing, playing bridge with lady friends and couples card club. Leona and John were worldwide travelers and had many adventures together. She visited 49 of the 50 states, 47 countries and 6 of the 7 continents.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren. They held an annual Christmas cookie bake since 1989, only missing 2020. Family life was very important to Leona as she loved and treasured time with each one.
Leona was a devoted and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She leaves behind many who loved her and who’s lives were enriched by knowing her.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws, Dorothy and Al Schutt, 2 brothers, Alois (Sonny) and Jerry Wagner and sister, Marian David. Brother-in-law, Duane David, and nephew, Dr. Mark Bernas.
Leona is survived by her loving husband, John and beloved sons, Mark (Linda), Steve (Sherry), Dan (Beth), Mike (Stacie) and six very dear grandchildren, David, Michael, Jenny, Hayden, Sarah, and Hannah. Sisters, Dorothy Bernas and Rose (John) Herrmann, Sisters-in-law, Karen Wagner and Adeline Wagner, Brother-in-law Tom Schutt (Barb) and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A wake will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, November 11, 2022, at the Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel in Hastings, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 12 at 11:00 AM at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church, Hastings with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Cemetery.
