Kay Louise Huhner, 69, of Apple Valley, formerly of Mohall, ND, passed away after a four-year diagnosis of ovarian cancer on July 2, 2023 at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis.
Kay was born January 29, 1954 in Mohall, North Dakota to Obert and Dorothy (Headrick) Asheim, grew up and graduated with the class of 1972 from Mohall High School. She then attended North Dakota State University and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics. Kay was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and continued her involvement after graduation, including serving as Chapter Advisor. She also was one of the founders of the annual Homes for the Holidays event in Fargo, which remains active after more than 30 years.
On June 11, 1983 Kay Asheim married Russell Huhner at Zion Lutheran Church in Mohall. Together they raised their three children.
She started her teaching career in Hawley, Minnesota in Home Economics. Kay and Russ moved their family briefly to Ohio and California, then in 1993, settled in Apple Valley with Independent School District 196. Kay was part of the opening staff at Eastview High School, and supported hundreds of students in her career with her mentorship program. She served as costumer for many productions put on by the Eastview Performing Arts department. She was also a board member of the Eastview Community Foundation.
Kay enjoyed cooking meals for her family and friends, as well as designing floral arrangements for weddings through Something Blooming, a business she shared with her close friend Debbie Hall. She enjoyed taking spring break and summer vacation trips with her family. She played a loving and very active role in her children’s’, nieces’, nephews’, and grandchildren's lives. Nothing brought more joy to Kay than having her family all together. She made steadfast, lifelong friends through college and into her years as a teacher and parent in the Apple Valley community. No Eastview graduation party was complete without a large serving of her almond bars. She was also one of the founders of the Battle For The Apple, the rivalry high school football game between Eastview and Apple Valley that benefited the Randy Shaver Cancer Research & Community Fund.
