Jacob "Jake" N. Gergen

Jacob Nicholas Gergen, age 87, of Vermillion, passed away at home July 28, 2022. Jake was born in Hastings on March 17, 1935 to Peter and Elizabeth (Bauer) Gergen. He lived in Vermillion his entire life, first Vermillion Township and later the Town of Vermillion. He was an enthusiastic farmer his entire life, constantly enhancing his farming skills and knowledge. His farm was recognized as a Century Farm in 1999 having been in continuous agricultural operation since 1899. Jake was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Martin and John; son, Michael; daughter, Mary; and grandson, Brian. Jake is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Betty Gergen; his children, James (Ann), Gerald, Sharon (Christopher), Kirsten (Robert), Alayna (Chip), Liza, and Daniel (Sharon); 16 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Betty Beskau and Mary Jane Harrington; and sister-in-law, Kathy Gergen. A Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Fr. Michael Tix, will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Vermillion. A visitation will be held 2 hours prior to mass at church. Interment, St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Vermillion. In lieu of flowers. please donate to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Vermillion. A very special Thank You to Fr. Tix for his constant spiritual guidance.
