Edmund Allen Tio

Age 97 of Rosemount. Born Nov. 16, 1926 in Spring Valley, WI to Marcus & Alice.  Ed and his family moved in 1934 to his grandfather’s farm due to flooding of the Eau Galle River that destroyed the home Ed and his siblings were born in. In 1936, they moved again to Gilman WI to a 150-acre farmstead. Ed graduated from Gilman High School in 1944 and enlisted in the US Navy at age 17 that same year. He attended Great Lakes Boot Camp, then transferred to Port Hueneme where he was assigned to the Naval Construction Battalion (NCB) 106 Section 1. On March 9, 1945, USS Clearfield departed for Pearl Harbor to Eniwetok to Ulithi and arrived off Okinawa on April 17, 1945. He landed on Ie Shima on April 20, 1945. NCB 106 was disbanded on November 28, 1945. He was transferred to      NCB 58 and ended his service on June 11, 1946. He worked various jobs hauling milk containers, gravel and assembly line work at Webster’s Candy Factory around the Gilman/Eau Claire/Chippawa Falls area for the next two
years until he utilized the GI Bill and enrolled in the engineering program at the College of Saint Thomas, graduating in 1952. The City of Saint Paul hired him soon after and he worked there from 1953 to 1988, staying on an additional 5 years in a part-time capacity while retired. Ed was very active his entire adult life. He played horseshoes with the Saint Paul Horseshoe Club for 40 years, danced to Polka and Ballroom music and enjoyed cross
country and downhill skiing. He deer hunted for many years including annual trips to Wyoming and northern MN with occasional trips to WI to hunt with his brother, Clarence. He rarely had a season with less than two deer. After retirement, he had a passion for golf, participating in a weekly old duffer league until he was 89. Many fun years were spent in Arizona vacationing with family and friends. There were countless family gatherings at the farm in Gillman that included lots of charcoal chicken. He played his favorite card game, 3-13, into his final days, teaching many the game along the way! He will be missed by all who knew him.
