David Theodore Sandquist, age 81, of Hastings, died Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at Regina Senior Living in Hastings.
David, son of Henry and Lilly Sandquist, was born on March 6, 1941. He grew up in & around St. Paul working summers at his aunt’s resort. He served four years in the Army Air Defense Command’s Nike missile program. He received his undergrad and master’s degrees in teaching from the UMN-Minneapolis and the UW-River Falls, respectively. He took pride in his 30 years as a special education teacher, 20 at Boys Totem Town. He was blessed with two children in his first marriage, Erica and David. He married Shannon Sandquist in 1993.
David loved cars his entire life: driving, restoring, and racing them. He was active in several car clubs: Golden Rods, GSTA, MSRA, & Cannon Cruisers. David had a passion for deer and duck hunting and found peace in his wooded home in Markville where he was surrounded by piles of books and magazines with an ice-cold Pepsi in hand. He’ll be missed for his quick, dry humor and incredible hugs.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lilly Videen; and his father, Henry Sandquist.
David is survived by his wife, Shannon Sandquist of Woodbury; his children, Erica Sandquist of Tampa, and David (Greta) Sandquist of St. Paul; his close friend Shannon (Rachel) Gray; his four grandchildren Britta (Brandon) McCauley, Isaiah, Jonah, and Vivian Sandquist, and by his 3 great grandchildren, Kayden Rehberg, Jameson & Wylder McCauley; and by his other relatives, and friends.
