David K. Mattson

David K. Mattson, age 82, of Hastings, MN, passed away peacefully at his home on October 29, 2024. Born on April 26, 1942, in Minneapolis, MN, he was the son of David and Eldora (Kyllo) Mattson.

After his high school graduation, David proudly attended St. Olaf College, where he earned a degree in English and Journalism, followed by a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota. His thirst for adventure and helping others led him to join the Peace Corps where he spent two years teaching English in Iran.

Upon returning to the United States, David settled in Hastings, MN to begin a career as a high school English teacher. It was there he met fellow English teacher, Carol Johnson. The pair fell in love and married in 1973, embarking on a lifetime of love, travel, and laughter, and were blessed with two children, Jeremy and Kate.

David was a talented director, recognized for his creativity and passion in directing many memorable high school musicals. Beyond his professional talents, he was dedicated to his family and personal hobbies. A lover of flowers and gardening, David was also very handy, even constructing his family home alongside his "apprentice" Carol.

He loved to travel, exploring new places with Carol by his side. However, his greatest honor was found in teaching, sharing his knowledge and wisdom with countless students, and spending time with his family, especially his four granddaughters.

David is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carol; his children, Jeremy (Suzie) Mattson and Kate (Ian Sorensen) Mattson; his granddaughters, Clara, Devin, Chloe, and Audrey; his sister, Kristine (Chuck) Alfonso; brother-in-law, Kip (Rhonda) Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Eldora Mattson; his brother, Stephen Mattson; and his sister, Kari Lind.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 PM on Friday, November 8, 2024, at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel, 3075 Vermillion St, Hastings, MN 55033. This will be followed by a visitation from 3 to 6 PM.
