Dave Lorentz

Dave Lorentz, age 70 of Hastings, died suddenly but peacefully at home on Sunday morning, November 24, 2024.

David Nicholas, the son of Donald and Bernadette (Ficker) Lorentz, was born on February 13, 1954. Following his graduation from Hastings High School with the class of 1972, Dave studied at the local Vo-Tech. On October 12, 1974, Dave was united in marriage with his high school sweetheart, Shirley Chandler, in Vermillion. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren in Hawaii, and created many wonderful memories that will carry his loved ones through this difficult time. Dave was a longtime employee at the Flour Mill in Hastings, and retired as a Blender in 2015 after forty-three years of employment. During his years at the mill, Dave was an active member in the union and served in a variety of roles advocating for workers' rights including leadership positions as a Union Steward, Secretary, and Vice President. Following retirement, Dave enjoyed golf, spending time at the car wash, manicuring his lawn, traveling, and wintering with Shirley in Mesa, Arizona.

Outside of work, Dave was an avid golfer, and even had 2 hole-in-ones on the same hole! He never missed the chance to attend a car show or drive his 2017 yellow Camaro "DL's Toy" around. You could also find Dave sharing a story over a cup of coffee or a game of cards with many of his buddies in town; he truly enjoyed these routines. Most of all, Dave cherished his loving family, especially his grandkids, and the time they were fortunate enough to spend together.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth; sisters-in-law, Sara Lorentz and Kelly Lorentz; and by his nephew, Ryan Lorentz.

Dave is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Patrick Lorentz (Tammy Schemmel) and Danielle (Steve) Vazquez; grandchildren, Rosalie and Gabriel; siblings, Deborah (Kevin) Gephart, Jeff (Donna) Lorentz, Jim Lorentz, Kevin Lorentz, Duane ‘Max’ Lorentz, Denise Hansen, Don (Lori) Lorentz, Dean Lorentz, and Denette Lorentz (Donovan Counts); and by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A Celebration of Dave's Life will be held Tuesday, December 3rd at 6:00 p.m. with meal to follow, at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings, with Gordon Gathright officiating.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. prior to the Celebration of Life at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to donor’s charity of choice.
